I realized how important it is to have a life of purpose and meaning.

In his book, A Path to Purpose, William Damon writes that purpose is “a stable and generalized intention to accomplish something that is, at the same time meaningful to the self and consequential for the world beyond the self.”

Purpose is different from a goal because a goal can be completed.  Wanting to be a father for example, is a goal with a finite end point.   In contrast, to be a “really good lover,” is more of an intention than a specific achievement.  On some days you will come closer to your ideal than others, but it isn’t a task to be completed.

Having a purpose can help you stay focused on the things in your life that are important to you.  A purpose serves as a compass, so you can prioritize your life.  Purpose allows us to set boundaries around people and activities that are not in alignment with us, and purpose attracts us to activities and people who align with us.  A sense of purpose can be a main driver to keep one motivated when things get tough, and a sense of purpose can give us the feeling that we are making the world a better place.

Research has shown that, as compared to people without a sense of purpose, people with a strong sense of purpose experience more optimism, resiliency, and hope. People with purpose are comparatively in better physical health and consequently have a lower risk of mortality as compared to those who do not have a strong sense of purpose. Having a sense of purpose is correlated with higher income and with being a leader at work.  People with purpose are just more satisfied with their lives.

So, how to find your purpose?  Here are some tips.  First, trust that you do have a higher purpose and that you will find it.  Second, listen deeply and carefully to your inner self- get out of your head and into your heart.  Intentional use of plant medicine is one tool that can help you connect to your heart.  Thirdly, identify those things that really light you up, and try to do something, every day, that connects you to those things.

Remember to not make this about money.  While it is important that our basic needs be met, chasing money is never the key to a fulfilling and satisfying life.    Finally, define what it means to succeed in your purpose, on YOUR terms.  In other words, don’t concern yourself with others’ definitions of success.
